Sustainable municipal development policy – Sustainable integration – Social justice
The importance of the role that municipalities play in shouldering global responsibility has grown enormously ever since the UN adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Concerted action on the local and global levels to combat poverty, climate change, and environmental pollution is now more important than ever. In Freiburg, development cooperation is greatly shaped, on the one hand, by a large number of committed associations and initiatives that, through their projects, not only make a local, but also a global impact. In the process of this, they assume global responsibility. The International Contacts Section, on the other hand, has been actively contributing for many years through various cross-border twinning projects for the achievement of the SDGs and the Freiburg Sustainability Goals. The multi-actor approach plays just as important a role as the sharing of expertise and technologies. Thanks to this broad commitment on all levels, Freiburg has been regarded as an international role model for many years.
Due to the influx of a large number of refugees since 2015, Freiburg established the Office for Migration and Integration in the city in 2016. The Office for Migration and Integration is a service and management entity both for refugees as the primary target group and for the field of migration and integration as a whole.
